Too Smart To Start
Athens Christian Center works with a non-profit youth service organization called Expand. Expand receives grants to offer FREE tobacco education for children and teens alike. It is presented in classrooms to ensure direct attention. Expand and ACC provides trained tobacco educators to conduct each 15 minute sessions.
The National Institute on Drug Abuse states that there are more that 480,000 premature deaths each year in the United States, well over 16 million people suffer from a serious illness due to smoking and for ever 1 person who has died due to smoking another 30 more suffer with a serious illness due to smoking alone.
Their statistics and trends show that in 2014 alone 25.30 twelve year olds have smoked, 10.30 thirteen to seventeen year olds smoke, 39.50 eighteen to twenty five year olds smoke and 24.60 percent of ages twenty six or old have all smoked in the last year.
The "Too Smart To Start" program uses an enhanced version of the 4-H Don't Start Tobacco Program as well as games, materials and facts from the American Cancer Society. The program is designed to be fun and informational. Illustrated props and demonstrations as well as printed material for students, teachers and parents will be provided.
